Response to Frank Magusin’s May 20th, 2011 comments to KIRO-TV

In all public comments prior to this week, administration officials stated that there was too little evidence of involvement to discipline any student.

Specifically, in response to the Deans Review guideline of having the student in question be suspended for 3 days, and be asked to write a letter explaining his choices, administration officials informed the faculty that no action would be taken because they had no real information about what any student had done.

The administration maintained this position through the end of the school year, at which point the responsible student had graduated.

In yesterday's statement to KIRO-TV, the administration reversed its position and stated that the responsible student had, in fact, been disciplined.

This about-face is perplexing to the many people, including myself, who urged the administration to take disciplinary action and were told that disciplinary action was impossible.

I am pleased that the school has reaffirmed its commitment to diversity and hope that any future such issues will be handled in accordance with the school's stated values.

I love the Bush School, and I have enormous respect for a great many members of the school community - faculty, staff, students, and parents.

Response to anonymous allegations

In the days since I posted my concerns about the Bush School’s handling of an incident of racism on campus, outrageous personal attacks have been leveled against me. Many of these attacks (all of which have been made anonymously) have concerned alleged assaults on students or affairs with colleagues. Some have wondered whether these accusations are the real reason that I was "let go.” Obviously, if I had behaved towards students in the way described in these anonymous online attacks, there would be documentation to that effect in my personnel file. At the end of my four years there, there was no record of any such incidents in my file, nor were any such incidents addressed in the conversation about my contract renewal.

It has been claimed by anonymous online posts that one of the issues I did NOT speak out about while I was teaching at the school was the issue of this racist letter. This, too, is flatly untrue. I communicated in writing with Jack McHenry, Frank Magusin, and the then-president of the Bush School board about the racist letter during that school year while the question of whether or not the student responsible would be suspended was still on the table.

I stand by my reputation as an educator. Although it has come at some personal cost, I also stand by my decision to address publicly what I viewed as administrative irresponsibility at the Bush School.

the original 36-minute nigga-letter video

This is the video that was posted originally on my Facebook page immediately following the BushBigBroadcast.

It's me telling a 7 minute story, but taking 36 minutes to it.  Sorry -- I'm a Math teacher, not a writing teacher; something that becomes obvious around minute 2.  There is, however, one Math error in the video.  Can you spot it?
